Emerita Faculty Julia G. Cruz, a professor of Spanish linguistics and Latin American literature for 17 years at CSU Stanislaus transcended this existence on May 18 at the age of 73. Dr. Cruz was born in McAllen, Texas, in 1939. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in 1981 and continued her teaching career at CSU Stanislaus in 1990, where she was instrumental in developing the university's Latin American Studies program and rebuilding the Spanish faculty. She was committed to celebrating her rich heritage and contemporary developments of Latin American literature and linguistics with her students in the Spanish program. Dr. Cruz, a charter member of the Stanislaus chapter of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, retired in 2007. Dr. Cruz leaves behind a legacy of support and love provided to her students and lifelong friends, as well as an impressive range of literary publications to which she devoted her life's work.
She will be remembered fondly by those who knew her -- both for her wit and wisdom and for her dedication to educating those she encountered along her professional path and in her worldly travels.
